Methyl isobutyl ketone is prepared by passing hydrogen and a mixture of acetone and a sulphonic or carboxylic acid in the liquid phase over a platinum group metal catalyst supported on a carrier at elevated temperature and pressure. The acid preferably has an ionization constant greater than 1.0 x 10<SP>-3</SP> and is suitably a halogen - substituted aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid or an aliphatic, benzene or toluene sulphonic acid. Isopropanol, mesityl oxide, di-isobutyl ketone and various hydrocarbons are produced as by-products.
