Abstract

1,225,953. Projectiles. WERKZEUGMAS-CHINENFABRIK OERLIKON BUHRLE A.G. 16 Jan., 1969 [6 Feb., 1968], No. 2714/69. Heading F3A. A projectile comprises a conical nose portion having a cylindrical extension 21, Fig. 1, a cylindrical body 14 having an inner tubular wall 16, secondary projectiles 71 arranged in annular rows, a sleeve 42 connected to the conical nose portion and slidable within the tubular wall 16 by an extent determined by stops, and a separating charge 51, Fig. 2, for displacing the sleeve 42 and thereby the conical nose portion to provide an outlet opening for the secondary projectiles 71. The charge 51 is ignited by a fuse 9 through a relay 49 and displaces a piston 61 rearwardly whereby fingers 56, securing the sleeve 42 against displacement under the action of the combustion gases from the charge 51, are released. As the nose portion moves, a pin 33, Fig. 1, is driven inwardly by a guide 17 to ignite a smoke or illuminating charge 30. The hot gases from the charge 51 ignite a charge 67, Fig. 2, through a delay charge 69, and a piston 63 is drive forwardly to expel the secondary projectiles. The secondary projectiles are guided along a curved trajectory by the guide 17. If the projectile makes impact before the ejection of the secondary projectiles, the fuse 9 ignites charges 52 in the inner tubular wall and destroys the secondary projectiles. The secondary projectiles may be hollow charge projectiles and smoke or star projectiles. In another embodiment the conical nose portion is fixed to the inner tube by a piston 94, Fig. 5, secured with a deformable pin 95. The piston 108 for expelling the secondary projectiles is slidably mounted upon four tubes 97 containing explosive charges 99. Upon ignition of charges 83 and 84 by a fuse 82 the piston 94 is displaced and the sleeve 71 and thereby the conical nose portion 75 are advanced by the pressure of the combustion gases from charge 84. The advancement of the sleeve 81 exposes ports 115 and permits ignition of a charge 110 which drives the piston 108 towards stops 98. As the piston passes holes 117 the gas pressure behind the piston ruptures a tape 118 and the gases in the annular cavity and sleeve 71 escape. The reduction of pressure in sleeve 71 permits the head to move rearwardly under aerodynamic pressure and restore the projectile to its original shape. The charges 99 destroy the secondary projectiles if the projectile makes impact before their ejection.
