Abstract

Mechanism for adjustable-rate axial feed of a rotary spindle B comprises an angularly adjustable setting rod F which lies in a plane intersecting the spindle axis at a variable angle depending on the setting of the rod, the spindle B being axially fed at a rate determined by the setting of the rod F by means wherein relative motion between the rod F and a bearing member E slidable therealong causes displacement of the spindle. As shown, the spindle B is rotatably and slidably supported in a bearing A on a base K which is attached to a surface grinding or milling machine table to enable a screwthread to be cut on a workpiece J by a rotating cutter or grinding wheel G. The spindle B is driven through bevel gears H from a drive spindle C mounted in a U-bracket M carried by the spindle B, the setting rod F is pivoted at the centre of curvature of an arcuate scale D1 on a quadrant member D which includes a bar D2 slidable in the U-bracket M and has a nut portion engaging screwthreads on the drive spindle C, and the bearing member E is releasably positioned in an arcuate slot E1 in the base K to allow the rod F to be positioned anywhere on the scale D1 by means of a clamp D3. When the drive spindle C is rotated by means of a star wheel C1 the spindle B and workpiece are rotated and the nut advances along the spindle C to displace the quadrant member D transversely of the spindle B so that the bar F slides through the bearing member E to displace the quadrant member D, bracket M and spindle B together with the workpiece J longitudinally of the spindle axis. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the drive spindle C is driven by an electric motor through a belt drive. The setting rod F and bearing member E may be curved so that threads of varying pitch can be produced. In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), two setting rods permit selective movement of the spindle in either axial direction, and there is provided a scroll-cutting attachment comprising a turntable which is driven through bevel gears from the spindle and moves with the spindle in relation to a fixed tool. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the setting bar is carried by a graduated turn-table connected by pivot means to a fixed base.
