Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A method of coiling strand material such as continuously cast and rolled copper rod, on to receiving means, said material advancing at a constant speed, comprises the steps of distributing said strand material through a rotatably mounted distributer, and rotating said distributer at a continuously varying angular velocity and continuously varying angular acceleration by distributer driving means so as to coil said strand material in spiral convolutions on to said receiving means. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a rotatable flier tube 12 for laying the strand 11 in stationary receiver drum 14 resiliently supported on a platform 16. A capstan 17 feeds the strand at a constant rate through the rotating flier tube whose angular velocity and angular acceleration is continually changed to effect the desired spiral layers in the drum. The platform 16 is lowered after each spiral layer is formed to maintain constant the distance between the flier tube and the top layer 87 of convolutions. This step by step lowering is effected by pivoted support levers 88, 89 attached to the platform, the lower end of the lever 88 being pivoted to a base 93 and the lower end of lever 89 being slidable in the base 93. Movement of the lever 89 is controlled by a roller 96 engaging a cam 97 and actuated by a fluid pressure cylinder 98. A pneumatic vibrator 102 is provided to vibrate the drum to ensure compact layers of spiral convolutions. The flier tube driving means consists of a variable speed transmission device 30 the adjustable diameter pulleys of which are controlled by a reversible screw-threaded control shaft 68 rotatable through clutches 64, 66 and bevel gearing from the device 30 which is driven by a power input shaft 18. An additional control of the output shaft pulleys 41, 42, 43 and 22 is provided by feedback through a flexible shaft 83 driven from the control shaft 68 said flexible shafts controlling an auxiliary variable speed transmission 50. The combined speed control provided by the two variable speed transmissions 30 and 50 regulates the rotation of the flier tube to give the required continuously varying angular velocity and acceleration.
