Abstract

[Also in Division H5] An electrosurgical instrument for use in the coagulation of biological tissue comprises an electric heating element 1 enclosed in a metal casing 2 to which is affixed an elongate holder 4 with a handle (5). The casing 2, which may be a parallelepiped or cylinder with rounded edges, has a hermetically closed cap 3, and an external projection 6 for use on small areas of tissue. The casing has a partition 8 defining a compartment containing a temperature transmitter 9 in thermal contact with the casing. The temperature transmitter 9 is connected to a temperature measuring unit (12), Fig. 3 (not shown), having an indicator (13). The temperature of the casing may be maintained at the required value, 100‹ to 110‹C for parenchymatous tissue and 110‹ to 140‹C for muscular tissue, manually by a switch (14) or automatically.
