Abstract
1,224,814. Counterbalancing. PICKER CORP. 15 July, 1968 [27 July, 1967], No. 32191/68. Heading B8B. [Also in Division H5] A counterweight system, provided in the tower assembly of an X-ray table to support an imageing device in moving towards and away from the table top, is such that movement of the imageing device through a given distance moves the counterweight through a greater distance, so as to provide mechanical advantage, the counterweight being so mounted that it can assume a position above the top of the tower when the imageing device approaches the table top. The arrangement is shown diagramatically in Figs. 6 and 7. The imageing device 17 is fixed at point 30 to the cable run 31 around a pair of pulleys 32. A further point 34 on the same cable is attached to an intermediate carriage 33. Carriage 33 supports pulleys 35 having cable 37 around them which cable is attached to the tower at point 36 and to the counterweight carriage 38 at point 40, this carriage 38 being fitted with wheels 39 adapted to move over the surface of intermediate carriage 33. Thus movement of the device 17 downwards causes intermediate carriage and also the counterweight carriage to move upwards, wherein since the motion of the counterweight is added to the motion of the intermediate carriage, the counterweight moves through twice the distance of the imaging device. In practice, as shown in Fig. 4, the axes of rotation of pulley 32 are perpendicular to those of pulleys 35, and two pairs of each type of pulley are positioned one pair at each side of the tower 18 and the intermediate carriage 33 (Fig. 3, not shown), respectively. The cable runs 31 and 37 are fitted in two halves, the free ends being bolted at 34 and 36 to the intermediate carriage and the mast 18, respectively. The intermediate carriage is channelshaped, being guided up tower 18 by guide means 59 and rollers 56 attached externally of the channel webs, the counterweight carriage being guided by strip 62 up the inside of the channel on wheels 39. The counterweights have been omitted from the drawing for clarity, but they are supported by horizontal web 62.
