Abstract

1,224,639. Electrostatic precipitators. GOURDINE SYSTEMS Inc. 14 June, 1968 [16 June, 1967], No. 28392/68. Heading B2J. The exhaust gases of a car engine pass through an electrostatic precipitator and subsequently through a catalyst for contacting the gas to effect a reaction with the gaseous pollutants. As shown the precipitator comprises a needle corona electrode 162 which co-operates with an annular attractor electrode 164 to establish a transverse ionizing field. A passive electrical conductor 170 is provided which becomes charged by charged particles contacting it and aquires a high negative potential. The voltage on the conductor 170 sets up an auxiliary radial field between it and a porous sleeve 168 which is held at earth potential. The catalyst comprises a coil matrix of platinum and projecting ribs are formed by punching or stamping slots in it. Alternatively a flexible strip of substrate coated with vanadium pentoxide may replace the platinum.
