Abstract

1,224,425. Grafted oxymethylene polymers. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 27 Jan., 1969 [27 Jan., 1968], No. 4458/69. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is prepared by grafting an unsaturated monomer on to an oxymethylene homo- or copolymer in a homogeneous phase at a temperature in the range 90‹ to 180‹ C. in the presence of a free radical-forming means and a solvent or solvent mixture boiling at a temperature below 120‹ C. at normal pressure. Specified oxymethylene polymers include homopolymers of formaldehyde or trioxane and copolymers thereof with e.g. a cyclic ether, cyclic acetal or linear polyacetal. The monomer may be a vinyl ester, an ester or amide of acrylic or methacrylic acid, a vinyl aromatic monomer, a vinyl heterocyclic monomer, a vinyl sulphonic acid or a vinyl phosphoric acid. In the examples, vinyl acetate is grafted on to (1) a trioxane-ethylene oxide copolymer in a methylene chloride medium containing ditert.butyl peroxide, (2) a trioxane-1,3-dioxolane copolymer in an aqueous methanol medium containing 2,5- bis(tert.butyl peroxy)-2,5-dimethylhexane and (3) a trioxane-1,3-dioxacycloheptane copolymer in a benzene medium containing dicumyl peroxide. A trioxane/linear 1,6-hexanediol formal copolymer is grafted in Examples 4 and 5 with styrene and methyl methacrylate, respectively in a medium the same as in (3).
