Abstract

Copolymers of vinylidene cyanide, a second monomer and an ethylenically unsaturated sulphonic acid, or blends of such copolymers with copolymers of vinylidene cyanide and said second monomer, there being between 0.1 and 2.0 mole per cent of said sulphonic acid and approximately equimolar amounts of said vinylidene cyanide and said second monomer, may be prepared by blending the respective polymers or by copolymerizing vinylidene cyanide and the second monomer in the presence of the sulphonic acid which is added when 60 to 85% of the vinylidene cyanide has polymerized. Specified sulphonic acids are styrene sulphonic acid, b -sulphoethyl methacrylate, vinylsulphonic acid, allylsulphonic acid and methallylsulphonic acid. The preferred second monomer is vinyl acetate. The polymerization may be effected in solvent and non-solvent hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon media in the-presence of inorganic and organic peroxides and persalts. The copolymers and blends may be cast or wet, dry or melt spun to give films and fibres which are readily dyed. Polymers of N,N-dimethylacrylamide may be added to the blend. In Examples (1), (2) and (4), vinylidene cyanide, vinyl acetate and styrene sulphonic acid in the presence of dichlorobenzoyl peroxide, and the copolymer of Example 1 is blended with (3) a copolymer of N,N-dimethylacrylamide and vinyl acetate.
