Abstract

1,224,133. Road signals for controlling traffic. W. E. JENSEN. 9 April, 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 18264/69. Heading G4Q. A traffic signal comprises a movable screen between a lens and a lamp, so that while the lamp is switched on, a progressively changing illuminated area of the lens indicates the remaining fraction of the illuminated period of the signal. As shown, roller 54 carries a flexible opaque sheet 52 which is unrolled by flexible connectors 58 which wind on to roller 66 driven by electric motor 74. The drive for the roller 66 includes solenoid 76, linkage 82, 84, and clutch 70. A torsion spring 90 allows retraction of the sheet 52 on to the roller 54 when the light is extinguished. Leads 98 are connected so that the motor and solenoid operate in the same sequence as the light. The motor, screen, and driving mechanism are mounted on a frame 42 which may be placed behind the amber-coloured lens of a traffic light signal. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), the motor is coupled directly with the roller 66 and the solenoid and clutch are omitted.
