1,224,126. Cams; chains; valves. FESTOMASCHINENFABRIK GOOTLIEB STOLL. 6 Aug., 1969 [7 Aug., 1968], No. 39285/69. Headings F2K, F2Q and F2V. A cam mechanism for actuating pneumatic valves 5 in precisely timed relationship comprises a carrier chain 4 formed of parallel transverse rods 7 resiliently and releasably interconnected by links 8, further links 8 mounted on the chain forming cam elements. The chain 4 is carried on sprockets on an idler chaft 2 and a shaft 1 driven by a motor 3, the cam elements acting on follower levers 6 on push rods connected to the valves 5. Each link 8 comprises sockets 9, 10 subtending angles of at least 180 degrees at their centres 11a, 11b and adapted to receive smaller diameter portions of the rods 7. A notch 13 midway along the link increases its resilience. A cam portion 20 extends over half the width of the link and may be trimmed as desired. The chain 4 comprises at each edge a double row 16, 17 of staggered links 8 with their cam portions 20 extending from the face of the chain opposite to that engaged by the followers 6. Links acting as cam elements are added as required intermediately of the side rows 16, 17. The rods 7 may be built up from sections which have screw-thread or push-fitted connections, to allow chains of various widths to be formed of standard components. In Fig. 7 (not shown), a carrier chain in a frame (32) is moved bodily over a rectangular path.
