Abstract

1,224,028. Laminate. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. 20 March, 1968 [22 March, 1967], No. 13459/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A first thermosetting resin in paste form is foamed in contact with a layer of a second thermosetting resin so that the foaming exerts pressure on the layers, and the resins are set simultaneously, bonding under the influence of the pressure. The paste may be located between two layers of the second resin to form a sandwich laminate. The layer or layers of the second resin may be reinforced with fibres of glass or asbestos or fibrous mats. The first resin may be polyurethane, polyester or epoxide resin. The second resin may be polyester or epoxide resin. As shown, a layer of glass fibres 3 impregnated with polyester resin 4 is formed on a web of regenerated cellulose 2, which is unrolled on to an endless belt 1. The layer has its thickness determined by a doctor blade 5 and is partially set by an infra-red heater 6. A similar layer is formed on a regenerated cellulose web 8 covering a second endless belt 9. Polyurethane 7 is foamed between the two layers as the latter are fed between the belt 1 and a third endless belt 15. Pressure arising from the foaming between the belts promotes adherence of the foam to the reinforced polyester layers. Heat evolved by the foaming polyurethane is sufficient to heat-set the layers of the panel. Alternatively, heat may be supplied to or withdrawn from the panel during its formation. The panel edges may be delimited by side pieces (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), devices (27) and (28) are provided for bending the two reinforced polyester covering layers, so that each of the latter is formed with two lateral flanges extending perpendicularly to the body of the respective layer. Opposed flanges of the two covering layers are sealed together optionally with the introduction of supplementary resin-impregnated strands so that the polyurethane foam core is covered on both sides and both edges. In this embodiment, the polyurethane is supplied from two reservoirs (26) and introduced between the two covering layers by nozzles (25). The covering layers are pre-formed glass fibre mats which are impregnated with the polyester resin on the respective regenerated cellulose webs. Abrasive brushes (32) are provided to tear the outer cellophane cover away from the completed panel. A cutter (33) is provided for cutting the laminate into panels of the desired length.
