A tool for crimping connectors to electrical conductors, Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown), comprises jaws 13, 14 operated, through means having a changing mechanical advantage, by a piston 3 supplied with compressed gas. An increasing mechanical advantage as the jaws close may be provided by a cam (210), Fig. 13, (not shown), or by toggle links 17, 18 connected to the pivoted jaws 13, 14. Thus the supply of nitrogen from a bottle 26 remote from the tool or mounted thereon may be interrupted by closure of a valve 50, Fig. 12, before the piston has completed its stroke, expansion of the gas already in cylinder 2 being sufficient with the increasing mechanical advantage to complete the crimp. A valve 34 in the bottle 26 is opened by a stem 37 as the bottle is fixed on the tool, supplying the gas along passages 38, 39, 40 to a valve 41 which may be opened by a button 43 to feed the gas into a valve chamber 49 from which it passes into the cylinder 3. The gas lifts the valve 50 so that it follows the piston 3 for part of the pistonstroke before encountering a seating 53 and interrupting the supply to the cylinder. A safety ring 56 surrounds the tool and has an opening for alignment with the button 43. A relief valve may be provided in the end fitting 27 of the bottle 26. A holder 60, Fig. 15, with a long handle (58), Fig. 14 (not shown), may carry the tool with the button 43 aligned with a pin 61 operated by a bevelled plunger 65 from the lower end of the handle.
