Abstract

1,223,613. Sodium tripolyphosphate detergent powders. UNILEVER Ltd. 18 March, 1968 [21 March, 1967], No. 12938/68. Heading C5D. A slurry for heat-drying to form a sodium tripolyphosphate - containing detergent composition in powder form, is prepared by a process which comprises forming a substantially uniform dispersion of powdered anhydrous sodium tripolyphosphate in water by stirring, which water can optionally contain minor amounts of the other ingredients of the detergent composition to be formed, hydrating the dispersed sodium tripolyphosphate to form an aqueous slurry of sodium tripolyphosphate hexahydrate crystals substantially all of which have a maximum dimension of not more than 100 microns, and subsequently admixing with the slurry other constituents of the detergent composition to be formed. It is preferred that the water contains up to 30% of sodium silicate with the optional addition of soap or other anionic detergent. The temperature of dispersion may be 15‹ to 45‹ C. or preferably 0‹ to 15‹ C. and the temperature of hydration 15‹ to 45‹ C. and preferably 20‹ to 35‹ C. The dispersion is obtained by intensive stirring in a non- recirculating device, using, e.g., a disc-rotor pump or a disintegrator mixer. The detergent composition may also contain anionic and/or nonionic and/or amphoteric surfactants, fillers, soil-suspending agents, bleaching agents, optical brighteners, colouring agents, germicides, perfumes and lather boosters. The compositions are free-flowing powders. Apparatus for carrying out the invention is illustrated.
