Abstract

1,223,311. Papermaking. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. 11 Jan., 1968 [11 Jan., 1967], No. 1668/68. Headings D2A and D2B. In the making of paper, at any stage from beating to the transfer of pulp on to the wire and in the presence of sulphate ions under acid conditions, there is incorporated into the pulp a polymeric condensation product of urea and a 1, 2-alkyleneimine having a substitutable hydrogen atom at the nitrogen atom, or an oligomer thereof. These polymers improve freeness and filler-retention and import wet strength. Fillers referred to are kaolin, other silicates, titanium dioxide, and zirconium dioxide. The pulp may be acidified by the addition of aluminium sulphate. In the examples pulps of the invention are compared with pulps using polyethylenimine.
