Abstract

1,223,258. Chucks. G.I.B. PRECISION Ltd. 13 May, 1968 [25 May, 1967], No. 24366/67. Heading B3B. A collet chuck comprises a collet formed of a number of jaws 12 operative to grip a workpiece, and a number of interposed spacers 15, the spacers 15 being themselves gripping jaws operative for a workpiece of larger diameter. For gripping the said larger diameter workpiece the jaws 12 are replaced by jaws for an even larger diameter workpiece which become spacers between the then operative jaws 15. The jaws 12 and spacers 15 have a common external periphery and are retained by circlips and/or rings to form a frusto-conical collet assembly that is fitted into a chuck body. The collet jaws are resiliently urged apart by circumferential springs and the jaws have flat work-engaging surfaces. The chuck is operated by a plunger (10), (Fig. 2, not shown), acting on a deformable ring (9) to move a member 8 axially relative to the collet (11).
