Abstract

1,223,215. Particle accelerators; magnets. MITSUBISHI DENKI K.K. 14 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 18909/69. Headings HID and HIP. A flexible device for deflecting a beam of charged particles comprises a length of flexible beam conduit 20 and a number of beamdeflecting members 22, e.g. electro- or permanent magnets or electrostatic deflectors, each of which is independently rotatable about the conduit and has opposed main faces which converge towards each other and adjacent members being in engagement with each other by way of these faces such that by relative rotation of individual members the beam in the conduit 20 may be deflected through any desired simple or tortuous, two or threedimensional path. As shown, each member 22 is a similar electromagnet with the angle between the main faces equal to the angle through which the electromagnet deflects the beam. The flexible conduit 20 is maintained centrally within the electromagnets by retaining members 30 which extend between the polepieces (26) of the electromagnets, Fig. 4 (not shown). The supporting member 24 forming the connection between the faces of adjacent electromagnets 22 may be of the ball-bearing type which includes an outer race 32 fixed to one electromagnet and an inner race 34 separated from the outer by two rows of balls 36 and fixed to the other electromagnet.
