Abstract

1,222,992. Oxidation reactions. LUMMUS CO. 8 Feb., 1968, No. 6333/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Oxidation reactions are effected in solution in or in contact with a homogeneous solution comprising (a) a Group VIII noble metal compound, (b) a mono- or poly-hydric alcohol, (c) a promoter having an oxidation potential sufficient to oxidize the noble metal from a lower to a higher valence state and being an organic compound or a, Group I B or a different Group VIII metal compound, and (d) 0À1 to 12% by volume of water. Suitable organic promoters are benzoquinones, chloronil, vicinal diketones and substances oxidizable thereto and catechols. Molecular oxygen may or may not be present. Examples prepare (1) acetaldehyde diethyl acetal from ethylene in ethanolic solution, (2) 2-methyl-1,3-dioxolane and acetaldehyde from ethylene in ethylene glycol, (3) 2- methyl-1,3-dioxepane and 2-methyl-1,3-dioxe cane from ethylene in 1,4-butanediol and 1,5- pentanediol respectively, (4) octanones from octene-1 in n-propanol, (5) acetophenone and phenylacetaldehyde (mainly as acetals) from styrene in methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and n - butanol, (6) 2 - methyl - 2 - phenyl - 4- chloro - methyl - 1,3 - dioxolane, acetophenone and 2 - benzyl - 4 - chloromethyl - 1,3 - dioxolane from styrene in 3-chloropropanediol, (7) cyanoacetaldehyde dimethyl acetal from acrylonitrile in methanol, (8) 2-cyanomethyl-1,3- dioxolane from acrylonitrile in ethylene glycol, (9) 2-cyanomethyl-1,3-dioxane from acrylonitrile in 1,3-propanediol, (10), (11) and (13) cyclohexanone, 1,4-dioxaspiro(4,5)decano and 1,5-dioxaspiro(5,5)undecane from cyclohexene in ethanol, ethylene glycol and 1,3-propanediol, (12) propionaldehyde and n-propyl propionate from n-propanol, (14) pivalic aldehyde, pivalic aldehyde dineopentyl acetal (new compound) and neopentyl pivalate, (15) phenol from benzene in ethylene glycol, (16) methyl ethyl ketone from secondary butanol and cyclohexanone from cyclohexanol, (19) 3,3-diethoxyfuran from 2,5- dihydrofuran in ethanol, (20) 2-benzyl-1,3-dioxolane and acetophenone from styrene in ethylene glycol, (21) diethyl sulphate from SO 2 in ethanol and (22) ethylene carbonate from carbon monoxide in ethylene glycol.
