Abstract
1,222,558. Glass fibre finishing composition. INSTITUT FIZICHESKOI KHIMII. 16 July, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17866/68. Heading C3P. [Also in Division D1] A glass fibre finishing composition comprises a polyvinyl alcohol, an emulsifier, water and an acetophenone-modified methyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate copolymer latex. The acetophenone is stated to act as a swelling agent. According to an example, the following exemplifying composition: 1À5% by weight polyvinyl alcohol, 3À5% acetophenone-modified methyl acrylate-methyl methacrylate 1: 4 copolymer latex, 0À5% of a mixture of polyethylene glycol esters of higher fatty acids (emulsifier and antistatic agent) and 94À5% water, was coated on glass fibres to the extent of 1À4% by weight and the tensile strength of the single glass filament and the average breaking strengths of the basic strand and 20-ply bundles were determined. Methyl - triethoxy - ethyl - ammonium sulphate may also be used as the emulsifier.
