[Also in Division G2] A photopolymerizable lacquer comprises a solvent, an initiator and, as photopolymerizable constituent, a compound of general formula in which R represents a high molecular weight saturated organic radical, Ar represents a benzene nucleus, a fused polycyclic aromatic radical containing from two to four benzene nuclei, or a ring assembly containing from two to four benzene nuclei, which benzene nucleus or nuclei may be condensed with one or two heterocyclic rings, and/or which may carry substituents that do not react with nitro groups, m is an integer from 1 to 6, n is an integer greater than m, and in which the Ar moiety may be attached to the radical R by an intermediate radical. In the examples polyvinyl alcohol is swollen in pyridine and treated with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride, picryl chloride, and m-nitrobenzene-sulphonyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol is acetalized with m-nitrobenzaldehyde, cellulose is treated with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride, a vinyl chloride-vinyl alcohol copolymer is treated with p-nitrobenzoyl chloride and polystyrene is nitrated, the products dissolved in cyclohexanone, and dimethyl formamide, Nichler's ketone, benzyl and benzoic-methyl ester added and coatings produced from these lacquers exposed to high-pressure mercury lamps.
