Abstract

The novel 4,4'-divinylstilbene derivatives can be substituted at the benzene nuclei and the two vinyl groups by non-chromophoric substituents, in which case the beta -carbon atoms of the two vinyl groups each carry at least one substituent but not more than one second-order substituent. The stilbene derivatives are prepared by reacting stilbene compounds which carry in each of the positions 4 and 4' an activated, optionally substituted methylene group or a reactive carbonyl group or a functional derivative of such a carbonyl group with reactive carbonyl compounds or functional derivatives thereof, or with compounds containing activated, optionally substituted methylene groups; the new compounds are useful as optical brighteners, in particular for polyester.
