Abstract

1,222.289. Tube couplings. T. W. HAMILTON. 21 Nov., 1969 [19 Dec., 1968], No. 60473/68. Heading F2G. A push-in tube coupling comprises a bore 2 in a block 1 arranged to receive a tube 20 and provided with an 0-sealing ring 14, a washer 15, and a peg 17 integral with a plate 18 affixed to the block 1. The washer 15 is circular with a hexagonal shaped opening in the centre to receive and fit the tube 20. In operation, the end of the tube 20 is pushed through the opening in the washer 15 and enters the inner part 9 of the bore 2, a seal being formed between the tube and the block 1 by the 0-ring 14. The friction between the tube 20 and the washer 15 causes the washer to be pressed against the 0-ring 14 and keeps the washer normal to the axis of the bore. If an attempt is made to withdraw the tube 20 from the bore 2, the friction between the tube and the washer 15 tends to pull the washer into a skew position, as shown, to contact the peg 17 on one side which causes diametrically opposite parts of the washer 15 to bite into the tube and prevent its withdrawal. The tube 20 may be withdrawn by inserting a headed pin (22), Fig. 5 (not shown), into a recess 21 so that it contacts the washer 15 diametrically opposite to the peg 17 to hold the washer flat against the O-ring 14 and prevent it from biting into the tube as the tube is withdrawn. The coupling may be used to connect two pipes, the block 1 comprising one of the pipe ends. Alternatively, the block (1), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be formed with a number of holes (2), each to receive a tube, and be secured by bolts (5) to one face of a valve (3) in a pneumatic logic &c. circuit. The bolts (5) also secure a plate (18) having a number of pegs (17), one for each hole (2), to the top of the block (1). The tube(s) and block may be made of metal or plastics, while the washer is made of metal.
