Abstract
1,222,280. Valves. M. H. GROVE and J. M. E. GROVE, [trading as M. & J. DEVELOPMENT CO.]. 10 Dec., 1968 [11 Dec., 1967], No. 58587/68. Heading F2V. A gate valve comprises a body 11, 14 having mounted thereon a bonnet 18, 21, 23 through which an operating stem 24 for the gate 27 extends, and sealing means including a rigid bushing 34, e.g. of metal, which is so mounted with machined clearances in the bonnet as to permit universal self-aligning movement in relation to the stem. The stem is sealed by 0-rings 38 of relatively hard resilient material such as nylon. The backing is also sealed to the bonnet by an 0-ring 39 which may be of synthetic rubber or other elastomer. As shown, the bonnet includes a plate 18 sealed to the body flange 14 at 41, and a flange 21 sealed at 42. In a modification the seals 39 and 42 are replaced by a seal between the bushing 34 and the plate 18. Sealant is supplied to the stem through a pipe 40. The valve may be manually operated or the part 23 may form the cylinder of a piston actuator.
