Abstract
1,221,887. Aqueous dispersions of polymeric partial esters. PPG INDUSTRIES Inc. 30 July, 1969 [31 July, 1968], No. 38201/69. Headings C3B, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C7] Aqueous dispersions, useful in electrodeposition processes comprise: (I) as vehicle resin, a mixed partial ester of a resinous polyol, containing free COOH groups having a M.W. 500- 5000; a portion of the OH groups of the polyol are esterified by a fatty acid and at least a portion of the remainder with an adduct of an unsaturated fatty acid with an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid anhydride, the ester being formed through the anhydride ring of the adduct; (II) a methylol phenol ether: in which R is an optionally halogenated unsaturated aliphatic radical and n= 1-3, at 1-50% by wt. of I+II; and (III) sufficient water-soluble amino compound to maintain the composition in dispersion. (I) may have an acid value < 100 and may be derived from a diglycidyl ether of a bisphenol or from a styreneallyl alcohol copolymer. The fatty acid and the unsaturated fatty acid used in forming (I) may be linseed oil fatty acids or tall oil fatty acids. (II) is preferably a mixture of allyl ethers of mono-, di- and tri-methylol phenols. The aqueous composition may have a pH of at least 8 and may contain a compatible organic solvent. Conventional pigments and aminoplasts, e.g. a benzoguanamine-formaldehyde resin, may also be present.
