Abstract

1,221,803. Substituted hydroxynapthamides. FERRANIA S.p.A. 13 Feb., 1968 [15 Feb., 1967], No. 7093/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises compounds of the formula in which X denotes an alkyl group, Z denotes a hydrogen or a halogen atom, R denotes an alkyl group of 5-20 carbon atoms and Y denotes a group -C(O)- or a group -SO 2 -. The compounds may be prepared by reacting an appropriate amine with a derivative of 1- hydroxy - 2 - naphthoic acid or of 1 - hydroxy- 4 - halo - 2 - naphthoic acid. Thus, 3 - amino - 4- methyl-laurophenone may be melted with phenyl 1 - hydroxy - 2 - naphthoate to produce the compound of the formula Certain other products of the invention are also specified and claimed. The products are useful as couplers in colour photography (see Division G2). The preparation by standard processes of the following intermediates is also described: 4- methyl laurophenone; 3 - nitro - 4 - methyl laurophenone; 3 - amino - 4 - methyl laurophenone; p - tolyl cetyl sulphone; 3 - nitro - 4- methylphenyl cetyl sulphone; 3 - amino - 4- methylphenyl cetyl sulphone.
