Abstract

[Also in Division A4] In the type of extraction apparatus wherein a filter web 23 travels through a compression zone 11 of progressively decreasing width defined by a pair of rotary members 1, at least one member 1 comprises an endless conveyor of hinged plate-like elements 8 whose lengths are at least equal to the separations between backing pressure rollers 19. This arrangement is stated to produce a more uniform pressure distribution. As described, filter web 23 is endless and is suspended from chains 24. Throughout most of its path it is relatively flat, but it is caused to adopt a U-section shape, Fig. 3, when passing through the compression zone 11 between the converging conveyor members. The open top of the U-section web 23 may be closed off during compression, to define (in effect) a tube (Figs. 13, not shown). Fruit pulp is introduced at 22 and expressed and filtered juice is caught by trough 31. Plate members 8 may be imperforate or formed from intercolated bars (Fig. 7, not shown). Rollers 19 are resiliently loaded. In other embodiments: (i) web 23 is replaced by three similar parallel webs, (Fig. 12, not shown); (ii) the conveyor runs are horizontal, web 23 being replaced by two endless non-profiled webs (50, 51, Fig. 14, not shown); (iii) one conveyor is replaced by a drum (35) which rotates inside the other conveyor (ii), a pair of filter webs (38, 39) moving in the compression zone so defined between them (Figs. 15, 16, not shown). Other features. The pulp may be preliminarily squeezed in the filter web by an array of rollers (53) before entering input zone 22, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown). Roller adjusting means, and means for scraping, brushing, beating and washing the filter web, are disclosed.
