Abstract

1,221,462. Rocket launcher. MESSERSCHMITT BOLKOW G.m.b.H. 28 Aug., 1968 [8 Sept., 1967], No. 41165/68. Heading F3C. A rocket launching installation comprises a lifting device 4 which forms a vertically and laterally adjustable launching stand and by which the rockets 76 are successively moved from a drum magazine 11 housed in a protective container 1 by a sequential control system to a launching position 7a outside the container. The lifting device 4 is positioned radially with respect to the drum magazine which is rotatable on a vertical shaft 57, the lifting device being pivotally mounted on a horizontal shaft 22 inside the container 1 and the distance of the fulcrum of the lifting device 4 from the shaft 57 being less than the pivoting radius of the lifting device. In the construction shown the lifting device 4 is actuated by a cylinder 31 and ram assembly and launching tubes 7 in which the missiles are housed are locked to the lifting device 4 by a locking device 42 such as described in Specification 1,221,461. The drum magazine 11 is provided with a central portion 60, 61, 64, the shaft 57 being journalled in the lower part thereof, a plurality of profiled bodies 78 connected to the central portion by cross-pieces 80 and tangential stops 82, the bodies 78 and stops 82 positioning the launching tubes 7 on the base of the magazine. The launching tubes 7 except that one in the lifting position are held by a spring-loaded device 85 which can be urged away from the tubes 7 by hydraulic lifting devices 86. A recess 72 is provided in the upper part of the central portion to allow the lifting device to pivot. The sequential control system comprises an hydraulic unit 13, a pump 14, and an electric motor 16, the motor 16 driving a toothed ring mounting at the base of the magazine. The container is provided with two hatches 3, 5 which are opened automatically on actuation of the launching installation. Two such installations may be mounted in an armoured vehicle (Fig. 2, not shown) and a magazine also housed within the vehicle.
