1,221,443. Carbon black furnace. COLUMBIAN CARBON CO. 7 Aug., 1968 [9 Aug., 1967], No. 37767/68. Heading C1A. A furnace for the production of carbon black comprises a heat insulated, unobstructed, vertically elongated chamber 1 having means 9 for injecting a fluid, non-gaseous hydrocarbon axially upwardly into an unconfined localized region of the chamber, at least one primary duct 7 for directing hot combustion gases upwardly and in contact with the hydrocarbon, at least one secondary duct 8 for directing combustion gases upwardly around said localized region; independent supply means 11 and 19, 14 and 22 for the primary and secondary ducts provided with control means 12 and 20, 15 and 23, for regulating gas velocity, temperature and composition in various parts of the furnace, and means for removing effluent gases from the top of the furnace. A tertiary duct 10 may also be provided to impart a spiralling motion in the furnace atmosphere. A metered stream of hydrocarbon is injected at a constant rate, preferably as an atomized spray of liquid droplets using steam at 100 p.s.i.g. as the atomizing fluid, through nozzle 9 and combustion gases are passed through primary duct 7 in an amount sufficient to effect partial but incomplete conversion of the hydrocarbon to black in the localized region. A second portion of combustion gases is fed through secondary duct 8 at a different rate and mixes with the partially reacted hydrocarbon-combustion gas mixture in the chamber 1 and completes the conversion to black. The effluent gases are removed through conical top section 5 and breeching 6 and the black is separated by known means. It is preferable that air is preheated to 600-1500 F. prior to mixing with the fuel. The properties of the black produced may be varied by altering the relative velocities of the gas streams and the oxygen/fuel ratio in the combustion gases.
