The departure from a desired contour of the surface of an electrically conductive turbine blade is measured by positioning the blade 11 with a gap of substantially constant thickness between the surface of the blade and a master surface provided with a plurality of capacitor plates 17, measuring the capacitance between the blade and each capacitor plate in turn, comparing each measured capacitance with a reference value and recording, as colour tone variations, the difference on a chart recorder driven in synchronism with the switching into circuit of the respective capacitor plates 17.
