Abstract

1,220,686. Silicone rubbers. MIDLAND SILICONES Ltd. 20 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 24692/67. Heading C3T. A composition convertible to a silicone elastomer comprises (1) a vulcanizable organopolysiloxane having a dispersity ratio of less than 2.5, and (2) a filler, the dispersity ratio being defined as the ratio of the weight average molecular weight to the number average molecular weight. The s loxanes disclosed contain hydrocarbon radicals with or without halo- or cyanosubstituents, and can be made in known manner by polymerizing cyclic siloxanes in the presence of a basic catalyst, preferably an alkyl, alkenyl or aryl lithium compound, and preferably in the presence of a polar solvent, and terminating the polymerization prior to equilibrium. The usual fillers and additives can be added and the compositions can be cured by means of high energy radiation or, more preferably, by heating with an organic peroxide or per-ester. Uses.-As electrical insulation in making high temperature resistant gaskets, as sealing and moulding compositions, and in making extruded and moulded articles.
