Abstract
1514500 Heat-recoverable polymeric articles BICC LTD 10 Dec 1976 [10 Dec 1975] 50544/75 Heading B5A [Also in Division C3] Heat-recoverable articles, e.g. breeches pieces for electric cable joints, are formed from a semicrystalline ethylene polymer, which may be chlorinated, derived from either ethylene alone or from a mixture of monomers comprising at least 50 mole % ethylene and no more than 25 mole % of monomers other than ethylene and propylene, by (1) adding to the polymer a heat-decomposable free-radical generator in an amount which is not sufficient to cause crosslinking by itself, and a silane of formula SiBY 2 R<SP>1</SP> in which R is a monovalent olefinically unsaturated hydrocarbon or hydrocarbonoxyl radical, each Y is a hydrolysable organic radical, and R<SP>1</SP> is R or Y or methyl, (2) moulding the mixture to a first condition, and before, during or after said moulding heating the mixture to a temperature high enough to decompose the free-radical generator thus producing free-radical sites in the polymer which react with the silane, (3) then (and only then) subjecting the moulded mixture to the combined action of a silanol condensation catalyst and water to effect cross-linking; and finally (4) deforming the article to a heatunstable condition. Step (2) may be effected by injection or blow moulding. Step (4) may be effected either by cold deformation below the recovery temperature of the article, or by heating it above the recovery temperature, applying deforming forces and then cooling below recovery temperature whilst maintaining the deforming forces.
