Abstract

1,220,667. Polyamide - polyester filaments. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 12 March, 1969 [27 June, 1968], No. 13130/69. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Core-and-matrix filaments are made from a composition comprising a molten anhydrous "nascent" polyester which when amorphous has a glass transition temperature measured by differential thermal analysis of at least 50‹ C. uniformly dispersed in a molten anhydrous "nascent" polyamide which has less than 12 m.eq./kg. of "minor species of unreacted endgroups" and a glass transition temperature lower than that of the polyester. A "nascent" polymer is one which has not been solidified after polymerization. The "minor species of unreacted end-groups" is either amino or carboxyl, which ever is present to the least extent. The polyester may be polyethylene terephthalate preferably with some of the terminal hydroxyl groups reacted with methyl benzoate. In an example the polyester contains antimony tritallate. The polyamide may be nylon 6 or nylon 66 terminated with 0À1-0À7 mole per cent of m-xylylene diamine or sebacic acid. It may have a M.W. between 25,000 and 40,000 and a relative viscosity in formic acid between 60 and 200. In examples the fibres are extruded into quench air flowing parallel to the fibres, they are given a lubricating finish, drawn at 185‹ C., using draw rolls and a snubbing pin, to a draw ratio of 5À8: 1 and twisted.
