Abstract
1,220,280. Grinding apparatus control system. SANSEI MFG. CO. Ltd. 11 Dec., 1968 [12 Dec., 1967], No. 58767/68. Heading B3D. A rotary surface grinder comprises a rotary table 3, Fig. 1, for mounting a workpiece and which is driven by an electric motor 13, a grinding wheel 7 mounted from a column so as to be vertically movable, and a saddle 2 supporting the table 3 and displaceable by a valve-regulated hydraulic cylinder to move the grinding wheel radially relative to the table 3. The electric motor 13 is a D.C. motor which is shunted by a fixed electrical resistance and whose speed is regulated by a solid state Leonard automatic control and by two rheostats one of which determines a variable fundamental speed of revolution and the other of which 16, Fig. 4, superimposes a speed modification so that a substantially uniform linear speed of the table 3 is obtained at the point of grinding, the rheostat 16 being connected in series with the first rheostat and being varied in dependence on the position of the saddle 2 to provide the uniform linear speed, and the valve regulating the hydraulic cylinder also being varied in dependence on the saddle position to correlate the speed of the saddle with the rotary speed of the table. As described the saddle 2 carries a cam 11 which engages with a rack rod 12 and moves the latter as the saddle reciprocates. At its other end the rod 12, Fig. 4, engages with a pinion 43 operating an automatic control valve 15 which controls the flow of oil to the hydraulic cylinder reciprocating the saddle 2. - The rod 12 also engages a segment 42 which controls the second rheostat 16. The arrangement is such that as the saddle 2 is advanced by the hydraulic cylinder so that the wheel 7 approaches the centre of the table 3 the speed of rotation of the motor 13 and hence of the table 3 is increased, and the flow of oil to the hydraulic cylinder is increased so that the linear speed of the saddle is increased. The saddle 2 is reciprocated under the control of limit switches which operate a switch valve in the oil feed line. The wheel 7 falls under a pawl and ratchet mechanism control on each reciprocation of the saddle.
