Abstract

1,220,131. Compressors. DUNHAM-BUSH Inc. Jan. 17, 1968 [Jan, 27, 1967], No. 2606/68. Heading F1N [Also in Division F4] In a compression refrigeration system having a gas refrigerant screw compressor 4 with an unloader slide valve 5 and motor 6, a stream of compressed refrigerant gas and cooled oil is used to cool the compressor and motor. The major part of the oil is separated from the refrigerant in the compressor shell by centrifugal action of the motor, and the remainder by striking an axially central baffle 64 to deflect the mixture radially outwards for axial flow through a passageway 68 having in axial alignment an annular separator unit 70 formed by a ring of woven metal mesh, the refrigerant passing through a central discharge passage 74. The refrigerant passes to a water cooled condenser 12, heat exchanger 16, liquid refrigerant dryer filter 18 and evaporator 26 used to chill a liquid. The separated oil is circulated through a sump 34, pump 36, a cooler 38, and filter 44 for delivery under controlled pressure through lines 48 to the motor bearings 50, through lines 52, 54, 56 to the compressor, through line 58 to the unloader 5 and through line 59 to a load control unit 60. The unloader slide value 120 controls the operation of the compressor so that it compresses the amount of refrigerant required for the load at all times. The valve 120 is connected by a spindle 124 to a piston and cylinder assembly 126, 128 connected through the line 58 to the supply of cooled oil and open to the suction pressure of the compressor so as to move to and from the full load position as shown.
