Abstract
1,220,080. Laminating. A. L. JAMES. 22 Dec., 1967, No. 58267/67. Heading B5N. A film of polyolefin or ether thermoplastics material, treated by electrical discharge or gas flame to render its surface polar and capable of chemically and mechanically bonding to other material, is applied to a substrate which has been heated at least to the heat-sealing temperature of the film so that heat transferred from the substrate to the film causes the latter to become heat-sealed to the former. The substrate may be of kraft, pouch, glassine or sulphite paper, paperboard, ground wood sheet, metal, cellulose, or of thermoplastic material different from that of the film. The film Pe is preferably of polyethylene and may be pretreated by electric discharge or flame and may be pre-printed, but in the apparatus of Fig. 1, it is treated on both surfaces by high-frequency high-voltage current applied by electrodes 19 as it is passed over rolls 18. It is then passed round spreader rolls 20 to remove wrinkles, these rolls having herringbone patterns on their surfaces; to a silicone-rubber-covered nip roll 21 by which it is pressed against a heated roll 13 round which passes a substrate web S which has been heated by a roll 12. A cooling roll 22 engages the roll 21, and, together with the roll 13, is pneumatically actuated to produce the required loading of about 70 lbs. per inch at the nip. The continued heating of the composite around the roll 13 relieves stress in the film. If desired, a foil F may be laminated to the outer surface of the film in the nip between a roll 21b and the roll 13, after which a further film, treated by discharge from electrodes 19a, may be added to the laminate in the nip of a roll 21a, against which the completed laminate L may be withdrawn. The heating and cooling rolls may each have a double shell through which a heat-exchange fluid is circulated. Tensioning pairs of rolls may be provided for the several webs to facilitate replacement of supply rolls. In a modified apparatus, Fig. 3 (not shown), for use with heavy substrates, the substrate is heated by passage through a gas-fired oven and two treated films are simultaneously applied to its two surfaces in the nip between a fixed cooling roll and a movable roll engaged by a cooling roll and, if necessary, sprayed by water.
