Abstract

1,219,826. I.C. engine fuel injectors. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. May 8, 1968 [June 20, 1967], No.21783/68. Heading F1B. The inner end of a valve element 68 is engageable with a seat 76 at the inner end of a valve chamber 48 and the greatest diameter peripheral surface 78 of the element has diagonal grooves 80. The chamber 48 has a cylindrical wall portion 60 adjacent to the seat 76 and a cylindrical wall portion 62 of greater diameter further outwardly from the seat. In the partially-open position of the element 68 the wall portion 60 directs fuel into the grooves 80 to provide a wide spray pattern A of fine fuel droplets and in the more fully-open position fuel may by-pass the grooves to provide a narrower spray pattern B of larger fuel droplets. Fuel is supplied to the chamber 48 through a fuel line engaging nut 92 locating a filter screen 94. The injector sprays into a pre-combustion chamber 20 with a starting glow plug 36.
