Abstract
1,219,568. Rotary bollards. G. L. GORE. 24 April, 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3497/67 Heading B8B. A rotary bollard for a ship's mooring rope 3 comprises a horn shaped part 1 mounted on a shaft 2 for rotation between one position (shown) in which the rope 3 is anchored and a second position in which the rope slides off the part 1 due to tension in the rope, the horn part being lockable in the rope anchoring position by a releasable locking device. The horn part 1 is locked in a position such that the tip portion la thereof is not aligned with the direction of tension in the rope 3, whereby upon releasing the lock, the tension will rotate the horn part into the second position. The locking device comprises a bell-crank lever weighted into the disengaging position and having a cylindrical ball race end engageable in one of a plurality of recesses 14 in the base of the horn part 1, the lever being locked in engagement by a wedge placed between the lever and a stand to which the lever is pivoted. The horn part 1 is mounted on the shaft 2 via either a ball and roller race arrangement as shown, or a sleeve and washer bearing arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment the bollard is geardriven by an hydraulic motor which also acts as a brake, however a separate brake band may be directly applied to the horn part. In a further embodiment the horn part is mounted on the shaft which is rotatable in a base-plate.
