Abstract

1,219,501. Stretchable laminated fabric. UNIROYAL Inc. 9 Feb., 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 6434/68. Headings B5A and B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and B8] A thermoformable fabric is made by providing a knitted fabric having at least a 75% stretch (as defined in the Specification) and made of thermoplastic textured multifilament yarn capable of stretching at least 100% by straightening the curls in the component filaments, stretching by an amount sufficient to remove all wrinkles, and applying a resinous layer sufficiently free of the interstices of the fabric and yarns to permit further stretching. In the examples, two successive coatings of polyvinyl chloride plastisol or organosol, the second optionally containing a blowing agent are formed on a casting paper, a circular knit jersey net of twist-set nylon multifilament yarn is applied thereon, the composite is heated at 380‹ F. to fuse and foam the second coating and the casting paper is removed. The first coating is fused at 250-380‹ F. before the second coating is applied. The first coating may be applied by rollers and the second by reverse roller coating. Alternatively, the resin may be applied by calender coating or as a pre-formed film. The fabric may also be of polyester, acrylic, polypropylene or triacetate yarn, and may be knit in a tricot or interlock pattern. Thermoforming of the treated fabric is carried out by heating to the required temperature and vacuum-forming over an aluminium die of truncated square pyramidal shape having a cavity in the top.
