Abstract

1,219,479. Mixing solids and liquids proportionately; metering filter aid. BOWSER Inc. 9 April, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 16930/68. Headings B1C and B1D. [Also in Division G3] The ratio of turbidity of a liquid at two locations along a main flow path is maintained constant by automatically controlling the addition of material to a by-pass between the two locations in dependence on the ratio of turbidity measurements made at the two locations, so that filter material is added proportionately to the turbidity of the liquid. In Fig. 1, the turbidity of liquid supplied from' a tank 10 to a filter 16 is measured by a meter No. 1, e.g. of the photo-electric type, before it is mixed with a further supply of the liquid which has passed through a tank 18 containing a slurry of filter material such as Fullers earth to aid filtering. The turbidity of the mixture is then measured by a meter No. 2. The difference between the electrical output signal of meter No. 1 and a predetermined proportion of the output signal of meter No. 2 is derived and integrated at 24 to control a solenoid operated valve 20 in an on-off or progressive manner so that the ratio of turbidity before and after the addition of filter material is maintained constant. Modifications are described in which unit 24 controls the supply of filter material only or filter material plus filtered liquid at the mixing point.
