Abstract
1,219,460. Impulse generator. INSTITUT YADERNOI FIZIKI SO AN SSSR. 10 Sept., 1968, No. 42924/68. Heading H3P. [Also in Division H1] A high voltage impulse generator comprises three metal cylinders 1, 2, 3 fitted together and having a liquid dielectric between them. The inner and outer cylinders 1, 3 are electrically connected e.g. via a common base 4. The middle cylinder is insulated from the outer cylinder by insulator 5, and also has a firing electrode 7 operating in the dielectric filled spark gap between the end of the inner cylinder 8, and the end plate 6 of the middle cylinder. A potential of + 250 kV. is applied to the middle cylinder and 125 kV. simultaneously applied to the firing electrode 7. A negative trigger pulse of 250 kV. to the firing electrode produces a negative voltage pulse of 250 kV. at 250 kiloamperes, which propagates away from the spark gap between cylinders 3 and 2 and then between the cylinders 1 and 2 in the direction of the load (not shown) connected to the bottom of end-plate 6. Water or any high specific capacitance dielectric can be used. Bellows 10 absorb the electro-hydraulic shock within the generator. Several such generators may be connected in series or parallel.
