Abstract
1,219,291. Inductors. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 16 Oct., 1968. [17 Oct., 1967], No. 48963/68. Heading HIT. An electrical coil assembly comprises a spool 10 with a flange 14 at one end thereof and a coil of wire 16 wound on the hub portion 12 of the spool. The flange has two bifurcated extensions on which the start and finish of the coil are wound such that there is at least one turn of wire on each extension in the space between the bifurcated portions, whereat connections are made. This may be done by ultrasonically welding the wire in the said space to the heads 30 of electrically conducting rivets 28 to which external lead connections are soldered at the tubular shanks 32. A dielectric base portion 18 having holes 25 with recess 26 in which the rivets 28 are positioned may be provided to receive the completed coil assembly, which may be potted therein. The coil ends wound on the bifurcated portions may be retained in place by a thin layer of cement. Alternatively, wire coated with an adhesive insulation may be employed, the adhesive being activated by solvent or heat to cause bonding between adjacent turns. A core or polepiece may be inserted in the hub portion.
