Abstract

1,219,280. Fifth wheel couplings. G. E. NEVILLE. 16 Dec., 1968 [16 Dec., 1967; 3 May, 1968], Nos. 57242/67 and 20993/68. Headings B7H and B7T. On a tractor having a pair of steerable front wheels and one or two pairs of steerable rear wheels, all the wheels being operable together and in the same direction, there is provided a fifth wheel coupling having a locking pin 21 which when raised to occupy a socket or arcuate slot 22 prevents or limits pivotal movement about the coupling. The pin 21 is operable from the driver's cab either hydraulically, pneumatically, mechanically or manually. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the fifth wheel plate is provided with pivotable flaps 24a and 24b which when in their upright position may be abutted by limit stops mounted on a trailer rubbing plate, thus limiting pivotal movement between the articulated vehicles to 15 degrees either side of the in-line position. The flaps are pivoted on shafts 27 and biased by a spring 29 to their in-use positions. A pneumatic, hydraulic or electrical actuator 30 is provided to move the flaps to their out-of-use positions.
