Abstract

1,219,175. Uses of luminescence. ELEKTROFLOR Inc. 3 April, 1968, No. 16115/68. Heading C4S. [Also in Division C7] A thin film tracer composition includes at least one fluorescent sensitizer selected from aminostilbine sulphonic acid, dibenzothiophene, monoazole, bisazole, coumarin, perylene, naphthalic acid imide, pyridotriazole and dihydrocollidine dyes, pyrene, 1 -hydroxy-2<SP>1</SP>-aceto - naphthone, fluoroanthene, and brightening agents, acridine and xanthene dyes having specified Colour Index designations; and a carrier for the sensitizer with the total amount of sensitizer in a concentration of not less than 15 grams of sensitizer per pint of carrier up to the limit of solubility of sensitizer, whereby the minimum film thickness at which fluorescence occurs is less than 250 millimicrons. The carrier is water, an alcohol, glycol, ether or pyrrolidone or ketone, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, nitroethane, silicone or fluorocarbon oil, rosin, acetone mesityl oxide, isophorone, naphtha, CCl 4 , perchloroethylene, methylene chloride, Na petroleum sulphonate, alkyd, epoxy or vinyl resin. Another dye to alter the colour, which may also be fluorescent may be present together with a surfactant. The composition is used to detect cracks in machined or welded surfaces and leak paths in tanks and pipes; to form a soldering flux containing glutamic acid hydrochloride and urea, which after soldering forms dry fluorescent material; to form an ink; to colour water in fountains and displays; to mark rubber gaskets and as an electrical insulating layer in the form of a waxy film from a crayon.
