Abstract

1,218,947. Travelling-wave tube amplifiers. ELEKTROMEMECHANIKAI VALLALAT. 6 May, 1968 [5 May, 1967], No. 21419/68. Heading H3W. A method of reducing cross-modulation distortion, of travelling-wave tube amplifiers 24, comprises modifying the input signal to compensate for the distortion at least in part by adding to the input a time displaced signal, derived from the input signal the phase of which is made dependent on the modulation content of the input signal. The input modulated signal is demodulated at 2 and fed via a broad band amplifier 3 to level regulators 4, 5 which control a voltage dependent reactor 8 such as one or more varactor diodes and a voltage dependent resistance 13 such as one or more diodes. The voltage dependent reactor and resistance 8, 13 pre-distort the phase and amplitude of the input to the travelling wave tube amplifier 23 via ports 7 and 15 of a circulator 6 in dependence on the frequency and amplitude of the modulation content. The working points of the voltage dependent reactor and resistance 8, 13 are adjustable by potential dividers 11 and 17. A delay cable 19 connects the modulated output from a generator to the input 20 of the circulator 6 and the lengths of the cable 19 in relation to the distance between the demodulator 2 and the input 20 is such as to compensate for phase delay set up in amplifier 3. The voltage dependent resistance 13 may alternatively be connected to the output 7 (Fig. 4, not shown). The amplifier 3 may include a frequency dependent phase adjuster (21, Fig. 5, not shown) before the amplifier (22) and/or a frequency dependent amplitude corrector which also provide predistortion signals.
