Application of transfer film 12 and design 13, whicn together with base 11 constitute transfer 10, to the curved surface of dish 15, is facilitated by providing at least one hole 14 in base 11. When the housing constituted by members 16 and 19 is exhausted through passage 19a and conduit 23 air entering through hole 14 exerts a force on film 12. Exhaustion of passages 20a adjacent passage 19a retains base 11 against the upper member 19, so that film 12 is separated from it. Pressurized gas may be supplied through conduit 27, rather than air. The transfer 10 may incorporate a watersoluble glue to hold film 12 to base 11, and be wetted before being placed between members 16 and 19, or may incorporate a thermalsensitive adhesive such as wax for the same purpose. Adhesive for holding design 13 to dish 15 may cover design 13, or may be placed on dish 15 before application of design 13. After design 13 is applied to it, the dish 15 may be fired.
