Abstract

1,218,661. Plasma torch. BOHLER A.G. GEB. 17 April, 1968 [17 April, 1967; 5 July, 1967 (2)], No. 18047/68. Heading H5H. [Also in Division C7] A workpiece of e.g. steel 7 is surface hardened by a plasma 6 generated by a plasma jet apparatus comprising a single hollow or solid electrode 2 supplied by a high frequency (10-100 Mc/s) generator 1, and a surrounding tube 3 supplied with an ionizable gas stream, the electrode 2 producing a high frequency radiation field with a high electric field strength which only heats the plasma strongly at the transition point between the plasma and workpiece. It is stated that neither the plasma nor the centre of the workpiece are strongly heated by the radiation field and that accordingly the cold plasma can be shaped with a non-conducting nozzle 8. The tube 3 can be omitted and the ionizable gas supplied through a hollow radiating (copper) electrode (Fig. 2, not shown). The workpiece 7 acts as an energy radiator and the amount of power absorbed at its surface can be adjusted by connecting an adjustable aerial to the workpiece. The aerial may be an angularly adjustable dipole, a telescopic aerial or an adjustable disc aerial. The electrode 2 is of thoriated tungsten and the plasma gas is argon ionized with the help of a helium-neon mixture.
