Abstract

1,218,543. Electro-erosion. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. 15 May, 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8347/67. Heading B3V. A die-set 20 is positioned for electrodischarge machining by placing the set on a lower platen 12 in a dielectric tank 11, moving the tank under an upper platen 21, raising the tank towards the upper platen, clamping the upper die part to the upper platen, lowering the tank to the correct gap between the die parts and filling the tank with dielectric. The tank is raised by ball-type screw jacks 30 operated from a gear-box 32 through mitre boxes 31. The upper platen is movably mounted on columns 28 and the tank is fixed to the columns at the correct gap by pneumatic ratchet blocks 40 which engage ratchets on the columns. Three hydraulic control cylinders 25 are connected to a master hydraulic cylinder which together move the upper platen to keep the gap constant in dependence of the spark-gap voltage. The die sets are insulated from each other by insulated guide bushes on one part engaged by guide pins on the other. The dielectric is oil which is fed from a storage tank through a flexible pipe (29), Fig. 2 (not shown), and a filter 41 by a pump 42. A sealed access door 101 allows an operator to inspect the die parts after the dielectric has been discharged.
