1,218,134. Recovery of solvents from treated solid materials; mixing apparatus. ASTRA NUTRITION A.B. 28 June, 1968, No. 31005/ 68. Headings B1B and B1C. [Also in Division F4] In apparatus for the continuous heat treatment of biological tissue material, e.g. removal of solvent from extracted fish material or boiling animal muscle tissue, the material passes by gravity from upper feed screw 5 to a lower discharge screw 7 through a heat jacketed vertical container 1 in countercurrent to a gaseous heat treating medium, e.g. steam, introduced through distribution pipes 9 and extracted together with the solvent through a conduit 11 to a condenser or like heat exchanger 12. The material is homogenised and mixed by stirrers 14 spaced mounted on a vertical rotary shaft 13 and having a vertical helicoidal pitch tending to urge the material upwardly. The stirrers may have a rectangular cross-section and the surfaces facing the flowing material are flat and may be arranged to form at least one interrupted open helix. The stirrers may also have a constant, upwardly or downwardly decreasing pitch, may be axially mounted for reciprocation and there may be several adjacent stirrers in the container.
