Abstract

1,218,077. Linkwork. INDUSTRIONICS CONTROLS Inc. 7 March, 1968 [15 March, 1967], No. 11104/68. Heading F2K. [Also in Division H1] A switch has an annular plate contact 36 normal to a longitudinal axis along which it is movable towards and from fixed ball contacts 48, 50 (52), the contacting portions of the ball contacts lying in a plane making an acute angle with the longitudinal axis. When fluid pressure in chamber 24 increases rubber diaphragm 20 flexes upwardly and causes plate 36 to engage the nearest contact 48, diaphragm 20 thereafter warping. Plate 36, and a hub 32 on which it rests, then rock about the point of contact (A) with the ball 48 until plate 36 engages the next nearest ball 50. Diaphragm 20 warps more and plate 36 and hub 32 rock about an axis (AB) connecting the points of contact of plate 36 with balls 48 and 50. This causes plate 36 to engage ball (52). The rocking movements of plate 36 produce a tangential force which rotates plate 36 about part 42 of hub 32 in an epicyclic manner in a clockwise direction (Fig. 2), this rotation cleaning the contacts and reducing wear. Plate 36 also has a limited transverse movement on part 42. A nylon or polytetrafluorethylene washer 38 is provided between parts 36, 32. The outer circumferential edge of hub 32 may extend up around plate 36. The balls are a snap fit in a holder 30. Springs 58, 60, respectively connect balls 48, 50 to conductors 88, 90, an electrical insulating washer 56 being provided. A spring 62 with an adjusting screw 76 bears on a pin 66 with a rounded surface 68 fitting into a socket 70 in hub 32 to provide a universal joint. Ball (52) may contact neither spring, or it may contact spring 58, ball 48 being dead. Plate 36 may have a sloping contact surface and the contacting portions (A, B, C) of the balls may be in a plane normal to the longitudinal axis.
