Abstract

1,217,972. Making tube stub ends; spinning. J. & S. EYRES Ltd. 11 Sept., 1969 [3 March, 1969], No. 11100/69. Headings B3A and B3J. A method of making a flanged stub end for a tube comprises taking an open ended metal tube of substantially circular section and spinning thereon an end flange extending radially outwardly from one end of the tube, and thereafter removing metal from the tube and flange so that a corner between a rear face 8 of the flange and an outer surface 10 of the tube part is substantially 90 degrees and a comer between a front face 14 of the flange and an inner surface 16 of the tube part, which corner may be slightly chamfered, is also substantially 90 degrees. A tube part is placed in a stationary die (30) in a flange spinning machine, which is provided with a rotary mandrel (32). The mandrel is movable so that its locus is conical in shape and of progressively increasing apex angle, Fig. 4 (not shown). The flanged tube part 10a is then machined to its final shape by cutting tools 34-42.
